Sir: I have the honor to inform you that the King has approved of a naval review being held at Spithead on Saturday the 24th of June on the occasion of His Majesty’s coronation, and of one man-of-war from every maritime power being invited to attend.
I have the honor, under instructions from His Majesty’s principal secretary of state for foreign affairs, to communicate this invitation to the United States Government, through you, with the request that, in the event of their accepting it, they will be good enough to communicate the name of the ship which will be sent.
His Majesty’s Government regret that on account of space it is not possible to invite more than one ship of each power to take part in the review.
