Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your note of the 6th instant inclosing copy of a despatch addressed to you by the minister of foreign affairs of Portugal instructing you to express to this Government his satisfaction at the friendly relations maintained with Portugal and the thanks of his Government for the recognition of the Republic by the United States.
I avail myself of this opportunity to thank you for this expression of the friendly sentiments of the Portuguese Government toward the Government and people of the United States, which I assure you is highly appreciated.
