With regard to the request of the German embassy of the 20ti instant, that the U. S. S. Machias be ordered to protect German interests in Bocas del Toro, the Navy Department, on the 23d instant wrote that Commander McCrea, of the Machias, had been telegraphically instructed on the preceding day to afford such protection I requested to do so by the German consular officer.
