Mr. Wu to Mr. Hay.
Washington, January 21, 1902.
Sir: I have the honor to inclose the formal receipt for the check for $376,300 which you were good enough to hand to me yesterday, this sum being the equivalent value of the silver bullion taken in 1900 by the United States troops from the yamen of the salt commissioner at Tientsin, China.[Page 131]
On behalf of the Imperial Government, I beg to express to you, and through you to the Government of the United States, the sincere gratification which the Imperial Government feels at this friendly and just action on the part of the Government of the United States.
