New London, Conn., August 5, 1898.
Sir: In continuation of my note of the 21st ultimo relative to the property of the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in Habana and San Miguel, I have the honor to inform you that I am in receipt of a telegram from Her Majesty’s acting consul [Page 988] general in Habana, stating that an attempt has been made by a man named Sanchez to extort money from the Joerg Mission in connection with the will of the late Dr. Belot. The deceased was, Mr. Jerome states, a French citizen, and Mr. Springer, formerly United States vice-consul at Habana is an executor under the will.
Mr. Jerome adds that he is acting in concert with the French consul with a view to safeguarding the interests of the French and American heirs.
