Sir: Referring to your instructions numbered 734 of 9th instant and 737 of 11th instant, I have the honor to inclose herewith the copy [Page 986] of a note, which I have received from the foreign office, stating that nothing has been seen or heard of a Spanish privateer in Canadian waters, and that the rumor on which your instructions were based is believed in Canada to be without foundation.

Your Excellency: With reference to your communications of 7th and 9th instants, respectively, I have the honor to inform you that the Governor-General of Canada has reported that nothing has been seen or heard of a Spanish privateer seeking a pilot in Canadian waters. His excellency adds that the rumor is believed to be without foundation.
