Mr. Vignaud to Mr. Olney.

No. 626.]

Sir: After receiving your No. 795, of December 10, concerning the judicial functions of our consul at Tamatave, which were to cease on October 16, 1896, I inquired of the minister of foreign affairs whether [Page 154] any provision had been made for the disposition of the cases pending before our consul which he may have been unable to adjudicate finally before the date mentioned.

I am this morning in receipt of a note from Mr. Hanotaux, saying that my inquiry had been transmitted to the minister of the colonies, whose reply would be communicated to this embassy as soon as received.

I have, etc.,

Henry Vignaud.
