No. 472.
Mr. Evarts to Mr. Maynard.

No. 225.]

Sir: Your dispatch No. 339, of the 29th of August last, in relation to the late homicide at Alexandria, has been received.

Your views as to the true construction of the statutes, as contained in your reply to Mr. N. D. Comanos of the 27th August, are in complete accord with those of the Department and are approved.

Particular instructions in regard to the conduct of the trial in the case of Mirzan have been given to Mr. Farman, the consul-general, who is now here and about to return to his post, so that it is hoped that you will be relieved from further trouble and responsibility in regard to that unfortunate occurrence.

I am, &c.,

W. HUNTER,
Acting Secretary.
