No. 371.
Mr. Mathews to Mr. Evarts.

No. 322.]

Sir: I have the honor to inform you that the Sultan of Morocco has encamped with his army near Rabat, where he is expected this week.

He has brought under subjection during his progress the Berber tribes in the province of Fedla, who have been in a state of insurrection during the last twenty years. Thirty-four heads of rebels have been sent to be exposed on the walls of Rabat to inspire terror among the rebel tribes of Zayr, who have been committing numerous robberies and murders this year in the neighborhood of that town.

It is reported that the Sultan will not remain more than ten days at Rabat, but will proceed without further delay to Mequinez.

Sid Mohamed Bargash, the Moorish minister for foreign affairs, has engaged one of the Gibraltar steamers to convey him to Rabat, having been summoned to the court.

The tribe of Angera, dwelling in the district between Tangier and Ceuta, are in a state of insubordination against their governor, Kaid Kanja.

I have, &c.,

FELIX A. MATHEWS.
