Sir: Your interesting dispatch (No. 227) of May 3 last has been received and read with the attention bestowed on all matters having relation [Page 24] to the unhappy struggle which is convulsing the South American people, and which, I trust, a wise statesmanship may at least restrain within its original bounds. It was hoped that the boundary question between Chili and the Argentine Republic, to which your dispatch more especially relates, was in a fair way of settlement.
