No. 519.
Mr. Jewell to Mr. Fish.

No. 29.]

Sir: I have the honor to inform you that Her Imperial Highness the Grand Duchess Marie Alexandravna, the only daughter of the Emperor, [Page 809] was yesterday married to His Eoyal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh. In common with the rest of the diplomatic body, I was present at the marriage ceremony in the imperial chapel, and afterward at the Protestant English rite in the Alexander Hall. We were also present in the evening at the reception in the winter palace in honor of the new Duchess of Edinburgh. The festivities arranged for the occasion commence next week, on the return of the Duke and Duchess from Tsarskoe-Selo. So far as I am able to learn, this marriage is much liked among the people.

I have, &c,

MARSHALL JEWELL.
