No. 343.
Mr. Fish to Sir Edward Thornton.

Sir: Referring to the note addressed to you by this Department under date of the 19th of June last, and to subsequent correspondence with Mr. Watson on the subject, I have the honor to inform you that the Secretary of the Treasury has declined to admit free of duty certain exports from Labrador, now at New York, in the absence of information as to whether Labrador is a part of the colony of Newfoundland, and that it is apprehended that considerable difficulty will occur for want of this information, which can only be furnished by the authorities of Great Britain.

I have, &c.,

HAMILTON FISH.
