Sir: Referring to your dispatch of July 7, No. 44, relating to the joint trial at Ohifu of persons who attacked Mr. Corbett, an American missionary [Page 346] at Chimi, I take pleasure in stating that your course in relation to the matter is regarded by the Department as prudent and fair, and that Mr. Sheppard has the cordial approval of the Department for the firmness and discretion displayed by him in conducting the case.
