358. Editorial Note

The Haitian presidential election, held September 22, resulted in the election of Dr. François Duvalier. The military government imposed martial law on September 27 when supporters of Louis Dejoie, the defeated presidential candidate, threatened to call a general strike. Upon the inauguration of Duvalier on October 22, the military relinquished control of the government and lifted the state of martial law.
