Editorial Note

On December 1, 1952, the First Committee voted on the Indian draft resolution (A/C.1/734/Rev.2) approving each paragraph by considerable margins. Then, the Danish amendment (A/C.1/L.5), proposing a 30-day instead of a 60-day time limit for the political conference to dispose of the remainder of the prisoners, was adopted by a large majority. The Committee overwhelmingly rejected the amendments of the Soviet Union (A/C.1/L.4) to the Indian resolution; and then passed the [Page 701] Indian resolution as a whole and as amended by a vote of 53 to 5, with 1 abstention. For a report of the session, see United Nations document A/C.1/SR.535.

At its next meeting, on December 2, the Committee rejected the draft resolution of the Soviet Union (A/C.1/729/Rev.1/Corr.1 and Rev./Corr./Add.1). At this same meeting, the 21-power, Mexican, and Peruvian draft resolutions were deferred until the President of the Assembly had submitted his report in accordance with the resolution adopted. For a report of the session, see United Nations document A/C.1/SR.536.

For action on these resolutions taken in the General Assembly December 3, see footnote 1, page 702.
