Editorial Note

On April 2, General Eisenhower, in a letter to Secretary of Defense Lovett, asked to be relieved as Supreme Allied Commander, Europe. Secretary Lovett replied on April 8 that he was initiating the appropriate action to secure General Eisenhower’s release, effective June 1. On April 28, President Truman announced that General Matthew B. Ridgway had been appointed to succeed General Eisenhower.
