The Ambassador in Israel (Davis) to the Department of State 1
645. Having heard that this govt was planning an official celebration in Jerusalem on May 11, I took occasion recently to review briefly the policy set forth in Deptel 340, February 142 when on a routine visit to the FonOff to make arrangements for the entertainment of official visitors. This was done to forestall if possible receiving an official invitation to celebration or at least prepare a basis for non-attendance shld one nevertheless be recd.
I have now been asked informally whether I wld consider it consistent with our policy to attend such a celebration in Jerusalem and have expressed the view that it wld not be consistent with such policy. I thanked the FonOff spokesman for taking matter up in this way and said I hoped no invitation wld be reed in circumstances. I understand my Brit, French and Belgian colleagues agree this view.
