Cantel 324. Director American Section, Foreign Office, under instructions his superiors, asked me to express earnest hope U.S. Government that Ambassador Stuart visit Canton prior returning [Page 739] US for consultation. In agreeing transmit request, I pointed out that, in granting departure Ambassador, Communists might stipulate different itinerary. Knowing Department’s desires this regard, shall continue avoid definite reply Foreign Office.
