The Secretary of State to the Ambassador in Cuba ( Braden )

No. 4694

Sir: There is enclosed a copy of a letter from the Navy Department27 stating that it is desired that the aids to navigation established by the Coast Guard at Nuevitas be transferred to the Cuban Government insofar as that Government is able to assume the responsibility for their maintenance. It is requested that the Embassy take up with the Cuban Government the question of the transfer of responsibility in accordance with the Navy Department’s letter.28

Very truly yours,

For the Secretary of State:
G. Howland Shaw
  1. Not printed; it was dated October 5, 1944, and signed by Capt. O. S. Colclough.
  2. There was no reply to this instruction in 1944. Although maintenance of aids on fixed structures at Nuevitas was assumed by the Cuban Navy in September, maintenance and servicing of all aids at Manzanillo and the floating aids at Puerto de Nuevitas continued to be the responsibility of the United States Coast Guard.
