Memorandum of Conversation, by the Secretary of State

The British Ambassador called at my request. I said to him that our officials in the Middle East were convinced beyond peradventure of doubt that the British representative at Jidda in Saudi Arabia, was doing his level best to injure the American Government’s relations with the King and, in other ways, endeavoring to undermine the American situation, and that we just could not put up with this without constant and louder complaint. The Ambassador requested that Messrs. Murray and Alling give his British associates the full facts on this point, and then he would be prepared to move in accordance therewith.
