The Minister Resident in Saudi Arabia (Moose) to the Secretary of State

134. My 120, April 22, 8 p.m.88 Saudi problems of supply and transport were discussed with King on April 23 and 24. King stated that successive dry seasons have reduced number of camels in country thereby increasing dependence on motor vehicles for transport of food. He fears risk of famine in interior if additional vehicles not obtained. He expressed pleasure over 50 lend-lease trucks expected to arrive shortly (my 131, April 29, 7 p.m.88).

In reply to question King stated that no agreement had yet been reached as to extent of Britain [British aid?] to Saudi Arabia for 1944. He was informed that President has approved policy that within legal limitations United States is ready to share subsidization of Saudi Arabia equally with British. King expressed satisfaction and emphasized need for friendly cooperation between American, British and Saudi Governments.

When asked for additional data on Saudi needs he stated that his Ministers would supply it. Ministers subsequently said that budget figures give essentials of information desired. When it was suggested that estimates for a few years ahead would be informative Ministers replied that 1944 budget was good indication of recurrent annual needs and that extraordinary needs would be requested Lend-Lease from time to time.
