The Secretary of State to the Ambassador in Iran (Morris)
581. British Embassy states Schwarzkopf has asked War for additional personnel to enable him to assume responsibility for Iranian police and that War has refused the request. However, responsible War official informs Dept that no such request has been received from Schwarzkopf. Please report on status of this matter.
For your information British have again expressed to Dept their preoccupation over security situation in postwar Iran and urged Dept to do everything possible to strengthen Iranian Army, Gendarmerie and Police. While regretting withdrawal of the Ridley Mission they welcome renewal of Schwarzkopf contract for additional year. They urge strengthening of latter mission to enable it to assume responsibility for Iranian police or alternatively assignment of a separate police mission.
Dept is entirely favorable to the idea of keeping the Gendarmerie Mission in Iran and of strengthening it as much as possible.
