The Secretary of State to the Ambassador in the United Kingdom (Winant)

858. Reference your 327 of January 13 and Department’s 381 of January 15.28 In view of the fact that the reception of children in Switzerland is to be discussed at the forthcoming economic negotiations, Department and FEA believe that our Mission in Bern should be instructed to associate itself at the first suitable opportunity with the British representations, which we assume from your reference telegram have already been made. We would appreciate your discussing the current British position in the matter with MEW and informing our Legation in Bern of the background of the problem and of the action which we desire should be taken.
