740.0011 European War 1939/26601: Telegram

The Chargé at Tangier (Childs) to the Secretary of State

849. The following telegram has been sent to Algiers.

96, December 17, 11 p.m. For Murphy. In accordance with Department’s telegram number 267, December 14, 11 [10] p.m. I saw General Orgaz today and stated that General Patton desired to pay him a visit of courtesy. I explained that General Eisenhower would have liked to call on him but he would doubtless appreciate that it was difficult for General Eisenhower to absent himself at this time but he hoped to give himself the pleasure of calling on Orgaz at an early date.

Orgaz said he was leaving for Madrid on the 19th but would return about 23d after which date he would be pleased to receive General Patton. I said that I would be at Orgaz’ disposition upon his return in order to make whatever arrangements might be necessary.

It is possible Orgaz may wish to offer a luncheon to General Patton. If he does not, I shall be pleased to arrange such a luncheon at the Legation to which Orgaz would be invited if this is agreeable. Repeated to Madrid and to Department as my number 849. Childs.

I mentioned to Orgaz before leaving that Ambassador Hayes desires to meet him. Orgaz stated he had hoped to call on him on his last visit but he had too little time.

If it were possible on this occasion, he would do so but he was not certain.
