The Chargé at Tangier (Childs) to the Secretary of State

584. The 19 American aviators and soldiers mentioned in my 582 of November 10 landed at the air drome in Tetuán early on November 8 after losing their way and running short of petrol. They were forced off their course by AA fire. Their plane was landed in perfect condition and is now under guard of the Spanish authorities.

The Lieutenant in command informed me privately that it was his understanding that he was not to destroy his instruments in a neutral country and unfortunately he had not undertaken this. The plane is a troop carrier.

Please instruct urgently what representations if any I should make concerning the status of this plane.
