The Chargé in Liberia (Wharton) to the Secretary of State

161. In view of Liberian Government’s invitation to Germans to leave country as reported in my 159, May 22,26 increased submarine activity along Liberian coast is anticipated. To combat such activity, as well as for other defense purposes, I urgently request that initial flight of three light bombers be stationed here as soon as practicable. In this connection I refer to last paragraph of Colonel McBride’s telegram 56, March 6. Such a detachment would also go far at this time to reassure Liberian Government.
