The Acting Secretary of State to the Ambassador in Brazil ( Gibson )
86. From the Secretary. Your 146, 147, and 148, June 8 . Please obtain an early interview with the Minister for Foreign Affairs and inform him that I am deeply appreciative of the friendly consideration which the Brazilian Government has given to the views of this Government regarding commercial policy, and that I have read with great interest and gratification the fine statement of the liberal trade policy of Brazil based upon equality of opportunity and treatment, set forth in the memorandum which he was kind enough to give me.[Page 269]
The action of a great trading nation like Brazil in standing forth resolutely for a liberal trade policy immeasurably enhances the possibility of general adoption of those broader principles. As the Minister points out in his memorandum, the best hope for world prosperity and peace is in the general application of these principles.
