The Ambassador in China (Johnson) to the Secretary of State

299. Following telegram has been received from the Consul General at Hankow:

“June 10, 5 p.m. Press reports from Sian state that Reds under Mao Tse-tung, Peng Teh-huai and Hsu Hai-tung have entered Kansu from northwestern Shensi, that on June 4th they were north of Hwanhsien on the Kwan River in eastern Kansu and south of Ting-pien, Shensi and that they would move westwards into Kansu or northwestwards into Ningsia. My latest information is contained in a telegram dated June 10th from Scandinavian Alliance Mission at Pingliang, Kansu, in reply to a telegram from me warning the mission that the Shensi Reds were moving into Kansu; this telegram reads

‘Red movement direction confirmed, main force northward travelling westward Tsingning, Americans in Pingliang city safe.’

I have sent telegrams of warning to all Americans known to be in or en route to Kansu or Chinghai.”
