The Consul General at Canton ( Spiker ) to the Secretary of State

Referring to my telegram of February 13, 2 p.m.,58 leading Hong Kong paper on February 13 published missionary letter recently written from Kweiyang and stating that whereabouts of certain American and British missionaries then evacuating mission stations were unknown. Telegraphic inquiry was made at once by this office and assurances since received indicate that all Americans in Kweichow Province evacuated to places of safety. Reports available locally indicate main body of Communists now over Yunnan border with smaller body possibly still in occupation of Pichieh border area, Kweichow.
