100. Department’s 64, May 26, 1 p.m. and your 114, May 27, 6 p.m., in regard to the smuggling situation in north China.

As it is understood that the Chief of the Eastern Asia Bureau of the Foreign Office, who was sent to north China to investigate the smuggling situation, has returned to Japan, the Department suggests that the Embassy in its discretion informally approach the Foreign Office with a view to reaffirming the continued interest of this Government in that situation and (with reference to the offer of the Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs to keep the Embassy currently informed) making inquiries in regard to the findings and results of the investigation.
