53. Your 47, February 6, 2 p.m. According to reliable information the rumor, which has likewise been current here, is believed to have originated in the United States. A responsible and informed official of the Colonial Office when questioned about it is reported to have made the reply that the United States had not yet been officially consulted about the conference and that he had no knowledge as to the source of the rumor.
[Page 524]A meeting took place 2 days ago between British representatives and Javanese. The British have not yet had time to reach any decision as a result of this conference. Further information may be available early next week.
