The Minister in Greece (MacVeagh) to the Secretary of State
[Received October 14—10:35 a.m.]
156. My 155, October 12, 5 p.m. I am now in receipt of a formal note from the Foreign Office as follows:
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has the honor to inform the Legation of the United States of America that the Fifth Constituent Assembly at its session of October 10 voted the abolition of the uncrowned democracy and appointed His Excellency General Kondylis, President of the Council, to exercise the royal power until the plebiscite which will take place November 3rd.”
Another note couched in the usual diplomatic language from the Foreign Minister informs the Chiefs of Mission that he is glad to enter into relationship with them. My British, French, Italian, German and other colleagues generally are replying to the Foreign Minister’s note in the usual fashion.
Does the Department wish me to do the same?
