The Minister in Greece (MacVeagh) to the Secretary of State
[Received October 12—2:10 p.m.]
155. My 154, October 11, 2 p.m. As the situation clears the coup now definitely appears to have been purely of a military nature to disprove parliamentary pretense. The number of deputies participating in the acclamation were only a small minority of the entire Assembly, many of whom abstained altogether from participating in the session. The new government appears to be firmly established for the [Page 501] time being and capable and desirous of maintaining internal order and conducting foreign affairs in a responsible manner. General Kondylis stated in his speech to the Assembly that “as regards foreign affairs the Government will follow the policy laid down by the preceding government. It will remain faithful to the pacts of friendship and collaboration and will preserve good relations with all states, neighboring and otherwise”.
