The Acting Secretary of State to the Ambassador in Great Britain ( Page )

339. For Sheldon [from War Trade Board]:

No. 902. On July 20 British and French cabled their respective Governments very fully about Denmark negotiations. That part of cable to Foreign Office stating War Trade Board was prepared to follow the opinion of London and Paris if they agree that the negotiations should be allowed to drop, we have asked them to correct in such a manner as to avoid the Board’s being committed to drop the negotiations even if London and Paris think best. While this might be the course finally decided upon as advisable, we prefer securing the English and French views without commitment to act in accordance therewith until we have had time to consider it. We shall be glad to have your opinion on the whole Danish negotiation after you have read British cable which expresses the Board’s views in all matters except the one referred to above.
