File No. 600.119/476
The Secretary of State to the Ambassador in Great Britain ( Page)
6207. Following for Sheldon from War Trade Board:
Your cable of December 29 through Department, No. 8098, also your cable through Department of January 7, No. 8170, relating to alteration of embargo policy in respect of nonessentials. British Embassy here have no information whatsoever with regard to this suggestion and, until they hear from Foreign Office and we have conferred with them, cannot answer definitely. At present we do not favor the proposal, and in any event, if there is to be a relaxation upon the strict embargo, we think there are several commodities which should be eliminated from the list proposed, such as salvarsan, novocain, and others.
Referring yours of January 7,1 we will send Mitchell as your assistant in connection with food import and export questions.
