To my great astonishment the correspondent of the Associated Press informed me to-day that a certain official in the Foreign Office had just given out to him the nature of my interview with the Chancellor on December 5 regarding the attitude of the President towards taking steps looking towards peace. He said that he was going to send a telegram on the subject to the Associated Press in United States this afternoon. I immediately went to Foreign Office and told them with emphasis that my communication to the Chancellor had been confidential, that I had so stated when delivering it, and that it was my duty to call their attention to this fact before the telegram was released. Foreign Office acknowledged that a mistake had been made and stated that they would suppress the telegram at the censor’s office.
In this connection I desire to record that no word regarding my interview with the Chancellor has been divulged by this Embassy.
