5052. My 5002, October 11, 9 p. m. [8 p. m.],1 5013, October 13, noon,2 and 5041, October 18, midnight. Symington had private audience with King George yesterday on relinquishing post of naval attaché. The King at once spoke with animation of the reported conduct of our Navy in connection with the German submarine U–53. His critical remarks reflect the feeling in official circles here. This feeling would, I am sure, be removed if the official reports of our naval officers were published. If practicable I strongly recommend that such publication be made.
