File No. 123.G35/52.

The American Chargé d’Affaires to the Secretary of State.

[Telegrams.—Paraphrases.]

I have just been informed by the Secretary of State that yesterday he appealed to the newspapers of Habana to cease their campaign of abuse and that they all promised to do so. He made it clear that there was no foundation for the attacks on me and that the guilty papers will make a full apology. He asks that these papers be not prosecuted in order to favor return to normal conditions; I replied that the matter was not in my hands but awaited the decision of my Government. Press attacks have practically ceased and the better class of papers are becoming distinctly friendly. The Cuban Government denies to the press that any message has been received from the President.
