Felix Diaz, rebel general, with less than 1,000 men, expects hourly attack by Federals. Consuls named committee who called upon Diaz, requesting avoid righting within city. He promised or would advise, if unavoidable, unless surprised. Gunboats against Diaz, under command Azueta, threaten bombard barracks located center city. This evening consuls requested me hold American steamer Monterey await arrival next boat and Des Moines be sent back here at once. Telegraph communications interrupted.
