Lisbon , June 19, 1911 .

Constituent Assembly met this afternoon and formally and definitely proclaimed the Republic. In accordance with your instruction June 6 and June 7, I have just handed minister for foreign affairs a note stating that the Government of the Portuguese Republic has this day been officially recognized by the Government of the United States of America, which is the first of the great powers to recognize it.
