Mr. Romero to Mr. Frelinghuysen.
Washington, March 11, 1883. (Received March 12.)
Mr. Secretary: I have just received your note of yesterday, in which, referring to that of your Department of the 16th ultimo (whereby you acknowledged the receipt of that which I had the honor to address to you on the 7th of that month), you were pleased to inclose to me, for the information of the Government of Mexico, a copy of a communication from the Secretary of the Interior, in which that officer states that he has ordered an investigation to be held with regard to the complaint that the Apache Indians have left the San Carlos Reservation and invaded the State of Sonora, and that if it shall appear that the said Indians have left that reservation without proper authority additional efforts will be made to prevent them from so doing in future.
In reply, I have the honor to inform you that I shall at once transmit [Page 685] to the department of foreign relations of the United States of Mexico a copy of your note of yesterday and of its inclosures; and that I feel convinced that the Government of Mexico will be gratified by the disposition of that of the United States to adopt any additional measures that may be necessary to prevent invasions of the frontier States of Mexico by Indians from the agencies of this Government.
