No. 346.
Mr. Evarts to Sir Edward Thornton.

Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your note of the 23d ultimo, with its several inclosures, in relation to an attack alleged to have been made by a number of Gros Ventres and Mandin Indians from the United States upon a party of Stony Indians of Canada, during which about eight of the latter were killed and several more wounded.

In reply I beg to inform you that I have communicated a copy of your note to my colleague, the Secretary of the Interior, in order that the facts may be inquired into, with a view to such action by this government as may be found to be proper.

I have, &c.,

WM. M. EVARTS.
