282. Telegram From the Embassy in Jordan to the Department of State1

581. USUN for Rountree. Reference: Embtel 564 repeated information USUN 16.2 King Hussein has sent me word [less than 1 line of source text not declassified] that Prime Minister Rifai has informed him intention resign as outlined reference telegram. According Hussein Rifai set August 30 as deadline receipt USG reply. If none received by that time indicated he would resign shortly thereafter. Significant in his conversation with me yesterday Rifai made no such stipulation.

Hussein said unless USG comes forward promptly commitment provide military/economic assistance including large scale budgetary aid which will assure Jordan adequate support not “for a week or a month but for at least two years” he about reached conclusion pro-western policies present HKJ government futile. His opinion when/as/if government changed there can be no half-way measures. Circumstances will dictate new government must be completely pro-Nasser/UAR.
