321. Editorial Note
As a follow-up to the informal invitation made on August 31, 1959 (see Document 316), Secretary of State Herter formally invited Foreign Minister Castiella to visit the United States in a brief letter dated November 5, 1959. (Department of State, Central Files, 033.5211/11–559) On November 21, Castiella accepted the invitation for the period March 22–24, 1960. (Ibid., 033.5211/11–2159)
The Foreign Minister arrived in Washington after a brief stop in New York on March 22. On March 23, he attended meetings at the Department of State and the White House followed by a reception at the Spanish Embassy. On March 24, Castiella attended various functions in Washington before returning to New York the following day. He spent March 26 and 27 in New York; March 28–31 in Florida; and on April 1, the Foreign Minister flew back to Spain.
