PM–27. Editorial Note

On November 28, 1959, mobs of demonstrators again attempted to enter the Panama Canal Zone. Prevented from entering this area by the Panamanian National Guard, the rioters proceeded to the business district in Panama City where they smashed windows and looted American commercial establishments. Twelve American soldiers and eighteen Panamanians—National Guardsmen and civilians—received treatment [Typeset Page 929] for injuries caused by stone-throwing and tear-gas burns; at least 150 persons were arrested. Documentation on these incidents is found in decimal files 611.19 and 719.00, and also in ARA/OAP Files, Lot 64 D 67.
