GT–33. Editorial Note
A group of dissident Guatemalan military officers forcefully seized arms and vehicles at a military fort on the outskirts of Guatemala City on Sunday morning, November 13, 1960. The American Embassy [Typeset Page 722] reported that the rebels evidently aborted or were thwarted from plans to take over the city’s two regiments. They seized the base at Zacapa, 70 miles northeast of Guatemala City, the port of Puerto Barrios, and the radio station at the nearby port of Matías de Gálvez on the Gulf of Honduras. The uprising and subsequent events were described in telegram 223 (from Guatemala City,) November 13 (714.00/11–1360), and despatch 252 from Guatemala City, November 18 (714.00(W)/11–1860). Additional documentation concerning revolutionary activities in Central America is presented in the compilation on United States policy regarding certain political developments in the Central American area.
