Editorial Note

On January 30, the government formed by Amintore Fanfani on January 19 collapsed when it received a vote of no confidence in the Chamber of Deputies. President Luigi Einaudi turned to Mario Scelba, former Minister of Interior in De Gasperi’s government, who succeeded in forming a new government composed of 14 Christian Democrats, 4 Social Democrats, and 3 Liberals. The Scelba government was sworn in on February 10 and received parliamentary confirmation on March 10. The impending fall of the Fanfani government was described in telegram 2290 from Rome, January 29.
