Editorial Note

Sudden announcements by the Soviet Government during the first week of March 1953 of the illness and death of Joseph Stalin stimulated an existing interest within the Eisenhower administration to make a dramatic appeal for a change in the international climate of opinion. Vigorous efforts within the administration to seek a proper time, forum, and approach culminated on April 16, 1953 in the President’s address, entitled “A Chance for Peace”, before the American Society of Newspaper Editors.
