The Ambassador in China (Stuart) to the Secretary of State

120. On evening 13 January, following delivery our aide-mémoire,90 Generalissimo met with Premier,91 Vice-Premier,92 Shao Li-tze,93 [Page 51] Chang Chun,94 Chang Chih-chung95 and Chen Li-fu.96 In view nature our communication, last three named were directed seek direct approach to Communists. Generalissimo’s departure was also discussed. Indications suggest he may intend leave soon, going Foochow and Amoy and then Taiwan.
