The Secretary of State to Representative Robert Hale, of Maine
My Dear Mr. Hale: The President has shown me your letter of February 7, 1949, which you and a number of your colleagues in the House of Representatives addressed to him with respect to the Chinese situation.46 He has asked me to say that he has given it careful consideration and has suggested to me that I might seek an opportunity to meet with you and the other members of the Congress who share our concern over the course of developments in China and discuss this situation in the light of the information at hand. You will, of course, appreciate that such a discussion would be of a confidential nature.
[Page 133]I suggest as a time Monday, February 21, at 10:30 a. m. and I leave to you whether the meeting place should be in the Department of State or at the Capitol if you care to arrange it there. Would you be so good as to communicate the foregoing to the co-signers of your letter and let me know what will suit your convenience and theirs?47
Sincerely yours,
